Audio version:

Hey everybody! Episode 22 of the show is out. In this show, I spoke with my friend Américo Lopez Sanchez. Américo and I met working together at the Amazonian plant-medicine center The Temple of the Way of Light where he worked as a curandero or doctor. Américo is a great doctor who has a real gift and a desire to share his knowledge. He is always trying to grow himself and become a better doctor and person. He works a lot with youth trying to pass on his knowledge of plants and Shipibo culture. I have a lot of respect for Américo and I think you all will get a lot out of this episode. And a big thank you to my friend Carolina for translating and opening up the conversation to a much larger audience. Thank you! “Américo Lopez Sanchez is from a town called Roaboya near Pucallpa, Peru. He also goes by the name Pekon Nima, which in Shipibo means “the many colors of nature.”

The story goes that Américo’s mother gave birth to him under a Shihuahuaco tree near a rubber plantation where his parents were sent to work at the time. His mother, already having had 3 boys before him, had wanted a girl and thus had decided to bury him. As a result, he was rescued and raised by his cousin, who was newlywed.  Américo carried these formative early experiences with him and was inspired by his father, Jose Lopez, and his work as a prominent healer. He decided to follow in his footsteps to become a healer in his own right, to help those who were suffering, misplaced, or otherwise seeking healing.

Although he was exposed to plant medicines from a very young age, he began his training in earnest at the age of 15 by dieting piñon colorado. At 19 he began drinking ayahuasca and assisting his father in ceremony. He describes this as a challenging time of multiple “tests.” Working through these challenges gave him the strength and spiritual stamina to continue his apprenticeship. Some years later after the death of his father, he started dieting stronger plants, and after years of arduous training in isolation, he felt ready to begin working as a healer in his community.

Américo loves being of service and is aware of the importance of traditional plant treatment, especially in communities where people find it challenging to access pharmaceutical medications. He is saddened by how many people he has seen die from lack of appropriate care, which is why he is so driven to bring healing to those who need it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Américo loves working with children and used to be a school teacher. He is deeply eloquent with a gift for storytelling. He tells us that in olden times, there was a direct line of healing from gestation with diets and song, and he would like to reclaim this type of traditional education that allows children’s gifts to shine through.

“Working with a Western audience I gain a different type of experience and strength given that I tend to work with bigger groups of patients than I would in my community. This allows me to expand my own comfort zones making me a stronger practitioner. Regardless of the origins of my guests, it is very important to me to be thorough in my work and to always come from the heart.”

Americo’s favorite plants are Chiric Sanango, Noya Rao, Marosa, and Piñon Colorado.”

Hey everybody! Episode 21 of the show is out. In this show, I spoke with my friend Romulo. Romulo and I met at the Amazonian plant-medicine center The Temple of the Way of Light, where we ran ceremonies together. Romulo comes from a lineage of Shipibo plant doctors or curanderos. He is one of the most dedicated doctors I have met and really spends a great deal of time and care on the patients he works with. He is also quite young for a doctor and I think he is one of the harbingers of a new generation of Shipibo doctors. He has a beautiful ability to share and express complex ideas simply. I think you all will get a lot out of this episode. And a big thank you to Tanya Kammonen for translating and opening up the conversation to a larger audience. Tanya and I met working together at the Amazonian plant-medicine center the Temple of the Way of Light. Tanya headed the Integration team at the Temple and facilitated workshops there as well. Tanya has a really interesting background and brings a depth of knowledge and experience to her work. I have seen her work deeply with and help many people. She has a lot to share and continues to go deeper into her own work and within the Shipibo tradition. Tanya went pretty deep and spoke about some really important things within this work. “Tanya Kammonen has Finnish, Irish, Ukrainian, and Hungarian roots. She grew up in Canada close to a river and has been interested in consciousness and spirituality since before having words for those concepts. She studied biology and naturopathic medicine and after seeing an increasing number of patients in her practice looking for help with integration post-ayahuasca, allowed that to become a full-time pursuit and became the first Integration Director with the Temple of the Way of Light, developing methodology and programming to help people make sense of their experiences and impactful changes in their lives. Since becoming a mom to her incredible son she has been consulting in various plant medicine-related projects and is part of the founding team of Oni Xobo, an intercultural organization that investigates designs, and implements projects related to medicine, art, culture, and environment, through a lens of divine love. Her intention is to apply and share what she has learned in ways that are true and inspiring to other human beings.”

Ep. 19 - Nelson Barbaran Gomez - Ayahuasca, Shamanism, Shipibo Culture, and Plant Medicine

YouTube version:

Audio version:

Hey everybody! Episode 19 of the show is out. In this show, I spoke with my friend Nelson Barbaran Gómez. Nelson and I have worked together for a number of years running ayahuasca ceremonies. He comes from the Shipibo lineage of working with plants and brings a joy and openness to his work that is tangible. He also works with a great deal of integrity and has a real desire to help and to share. For these reasons, I think he is a really good example of a great curandero. He is leading the way for a new generation of doctors and he has a lot to share and offer. I think you all will get a lot out of this episode. And a big thank you to my friend Carolina for translating and opening up the conversation to a much larger audience. Thank you! “Nelson is native of the community of Nuevo Paraiso. His Shipibo name is Isasina, meaning “a bird who takes care of others.”

Nelson comes from a family of curanderos; both his father and grandfather practiced medicine. His parents died when he was very young, and very early on he started sitting in ceremonies held by his older brother, who is also a curandero. Lacking parental guidance, Nelson learned from the medicine “how to be a good human being.”

Nelson drank ayahuasca for the first time at age twelve and was immediately fascinated by the medicine world. Soon afterward, he asked his brother to open his first dieta for him. Following the advice of his older brother, Nelson mentally prepared over the course of one full year, strongly setting his intentions to become a healer at the service of others. After a year, his brother agreed to initiate Nelson on the path to become a Shipibo Onanya.

Over the course of the next two years, Nelson dieted and learned from the plants, crafting his own pipe and learning how to control and direct the mareación. During this period, he went through many of the challenges and tests that the plant spirits presented him in order to learn. At age 15 he started treating patients, and one year later started learning more closely with his grandfather Francisco. Nelson started working with western patients when he was 16. For Nelson, these encounters have been good opportunities to exchange ideas and knowledge between different cultures, and he has a deep appreciation for western psychotherapy and psychology.

Nelson is passionate about his work and craft and is committed to helping others with his medicine. He is also passionate about his own culture and sees his work as a vehicle to recover and preserve traditional practices and knowledge in a rapidly changing world. He enjoys seeing schools in some native communities teaching the Shipibo language again, encouraging kids to dress in their traditional clothes, address each other in their Shipibo names, and is proud of his role in the current revitalization of the Shipibo culture.”
