Ep. 47 - Publio Valle - Yoga, Buddhism, Sacred Plant Medicines & Life

YouTube version:

Audio version:

Hey everybody! Episode 47 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with my friend Publio Valle. Publio and I met while working together at the Amazonian plant medicine center, The Temple of the Way of Light. Publio has taught yoga, meditation, and self-inquiry there, facilitated ceremonies, and also managed the center. Publio has a varied background of practices including yoga, meditation, Buddhism, and plant medicine work. He is a gentle and beautiful man and has a beautiful ability to convey many topics into easily digestible words. It was a pleasure for me to be able to sit down with him and hear him share his many years of varied knowledge. I hope and imagine you all will get a lot out of this episode. "My journey began in São Simão, a small town in the Brazilian countryside. My father, a healer from a traditional Brazilian lineage of curanderos,  was my first teacher. I grew up watching him find very concrete ways to serve -- by feeding people, by building a school to offer the most disadvantaged children in our region access to quality education. He also continues to help people on an energetic level, providing healing for emotional wounds, family problems as well as physical ailments.

I earned a degree in International Relations at the University of Brasilia, a city where I first experienced transpersonal psychology - mainly through a body of work known as Core Energetics. During my university years, I came into contact with the ancient wisdom of South American indigenous people. Traveling through Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Argentina and Colombia, I became fascinated by the beauty of this land and by the chants of its people. I traveled to the city of Pucallpa in the Peruvian Amazon for an experience with ayahuasca with Shipibo healers. It changed my life forever.

After university and South America I left for India. In Bodh Gaya, the village where Lord Buddha sat under the famous Bodhi tree and became enlightened, I received deep learning as a volunteer and then coordinator of the Alice Project, a school teaching and researching meditation techniques with children from some of India’s poorest villages.

In Asia I also discovered Insight Meditation, and trained in Vipassana meditation in India, Indonesia, Thailand and at the Pa Auk Monastery in Burma. In South India, I studied at Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana, a yoga university where, in 2013, I earned a post-graduate degree in Yoga Therapy. During this time, I was able to realize yoga’s scientific aspects while working at a yoga hospital, a place that used ancient Indian techniques to help people to deal with different ailments such as depression, anxiety, chronic pain, migraines and cancer.

Back in Brazil I worked as coordinator of the “Living in Group” program at the University of Light, one of the most mature communities in Brazil, deeply inspired by Findhorn, in Scotland.

Today, I spend much of my time working in my home town and surrounding areas with a range of different experiential therapies including yoga, breathwork, acupuncture, chanting, dharma talks – and of course meditation. Twice a year, for two months, I take over as Director of the Temple of the Way of Light in Peru, a very unique place in the Amazon jungle, where I’ve spent extended periods over the past few years as a facilitator and yoga and meditation teacher.

Observing my father as I was growing up, and seeing how healthy he was as a result of this work, I learned a deep insight. A key part of my work and process is not just to locate and support the healing of the emotional wounds that can act as blocks to our healthy mental and physical well-being. Through the process of going deeper, below the limits of the conscious mind, we can also locate the precious gems which exist in each one of us: those unique gifts that are waiting to be discovered – and amplified – in service to something bigger than ourselves.”

Ep. 46 - Joey Greenstone - Wachuma, Ayahuasca & The Medicine Path

YouTube version:

Audio version:

Hey everybody! Episode 46 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with Joey Greenstone. Joey was introduced to me by mutual friends who had worked with him, and they both spoke very highly of him. Joey works with the Andean plant medicine Wachuma (also Huachuma or San Pedro). We spoke about Joey’s background, his voyage into the world of plant medicines, what he has learned, some of the pitfalls, and how he has emerged as a guide who looks to help by sharing this ancient knowledge. I really enjoyed speaking with Joey, connecting on a personal level, and learned from him about a plant that is very dear to him. I hope you all will get a lot out of this episode. Ep. 45 - Tree Carr - Death & Dying, Dreams, Doulas, & Sacred Plant Medicines

YouTube version:

Audio version:

Hey everybody! Episode 45 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with Tree Carr. Tree was introduced to me by a mutual friend, Luis, who I interviewed in episode 25 of the show. Tree is a Death Doula and also a Dreaming Guide. I find these two topics fascinating, because for me, if this path with plants and shamanism had to be boiled down to two topics, death and dreaming could certainly be seen as two of the fundamental pillars. So it was really fascinating for me to be able to speak with Tree who specializes in exactly these two areas. Tree has a beautiful way of expressing herself and bringing these, sometimes abstract ideas, into very easy language and concepts, which isn’t an easy thing to do. This interview with Tree was a real pleasure for me, as can be seen by the fact that we went almost four hours! We got into a variety of topics including her background, death and dying, dreams, plant work, divination, and even witches! And as Tree said, the word witch, often misunderstood, comes from Wicca, meaning wisdom. And I think in that sense Tree really embodies and expresses that wisdom beautifully. I hope and imagine you all will get a lot out of this episode. As always, to view bonus material, get early access to shows, and Q&As, check out my Patreon page below. Enjoy!

Ep. 44 - Roman Hanis - Paititi Institute, Sacred Science & Medicines, Esoteric Knowledge, & Healing

YouTube version:

Audio version:

Hey everybody! Episode 44 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with Roman Hanis. I have known about Roman since I arrived in the Amazonian jungles of Peru. And having worked in this field for the past decade, I've come to hear about many centers and people working with these medicines. It's rare to only hear good things about a place, but that's just the case with the Paititi Institute, which Roman founded. In this interview, Roman and I discussed myriad topics from his background and work, to ancient traditions, sacred plants medicines, learning, and healing. Roman has a beautiful way of expressing himself and putting, often esoteric or abstract ideas, into very understandable dialogue. I find Roman's view of the work and world of plant medicine to closely parallel mine, and so it was a pleasure to hear his point of view based on many years of personal and interpersonal work. Roman is one of the wiser voices in this field and this interview turned out to be one of my favorites in terms of the depth and knowledge that he shared. I hope and think you all will gain a lot from this interview. To view bonus material, get access to Q&A’s, and extended conversations, check out my Patreon page below. Enjoy!

“Roman Hanis has been working closely with the indigenous Peruvian cultures in the Amazonian rainforest and Andean mountains since 2001. During this time he has devoted this life to learning the ancient healing ways of these cultures while seeking possibilities for creating ecological sources of sustenance for local populations and working to preserve the rainforest and its spiritual heritage of sacred medicinal plants.

Seeing the vital role that ancient cultural practices can play in today’s world, Roman honors and shares their value and wisdom through his work in community projects, healing retreats and educational workshops in both Peru and the U.S.

He is a certified Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioner in Peru, and studied the fundamentals of TCM and acupuncture as an apprentice under the director of the Open International Institute of Oriental Medicine, Myriam Hacker, in Iquitos, Peru.

In 2002, Roman was fortunate enough to be cured of a terminal genetic illness , Crohn’s disease. In 2004, he was pledged as a healer-curandero by the Whitoto and Yahua tribes and has served the international community as a medicine man ever since. He has also practiced physical trauma rehabilitation, medical massage therapy and Eastern bodywork, having earned his degree from New York’s Swedish Institute of Health. With these tools and concentrated efforts, he has been able to help numerous individuals overcome many health issues and pathologies on physical, mental and spiritual levels.

Since 1999, Roman has also practiced the Eastern spiritual disciplines of Tibetan Buddhism, breathwork & meditation, QiGong, Yoga, Shaolin physical therapy and Toltec practices. In addition, he has worked to understand these disciplines from the perspective of Jungian psychology. He speaks Spanish, Hebrew, Russian and English.

Roman looks forward to eradicating suffering in the world and its cause, ignorance, by promoting education on the possibilities of more sustainable, harmonious relationships with nature, while simultaneously creating supportive, self-sustaining and nurturing communities.”
