Hey everybody! In this show, I spoke with my friend Brian Best. Brian and I met when I first came to the Amazon. Brian is a fascinating guy who I have a lot of respect for. He has a knowledge of the Shipibo language and culture that is unparalleled. He carries a deep respect for their wisdom and medicine and is a phenomenal bridge to gaining insight into the world of plant medicine. I knew this would be one of my favorite interviews and it didn't disappoint. It was an epic conversation of 4.5 hours and there is a lot of priceless knowledge and wisdom that he shared. In the first half of the show, we spoke about Brian's journey and in the second half, we got into language, medicine, and cosmovision. I think you all will gain a tremendous amount from this interview. To view bonus material and extended conversations, check out my Patreon page below. Enjoy!

“Brian is a linguistic anthropologist and an ecological sanitation specialist, who has been a student of Manuela since 2011. His studies led him to the Ucayali River region where he has been sharing and learning with the Shipibo-Konibo since 2003.  In 2016 he began focusing on Shipibo-Konibo language revitalization and received a master’s degree in Native American Languages and Linguistics in 2019. His thesis, Jakón Jói, examines the links between Indigenous language dictionaries and Indigenous Decolonization and describes an ongoing project to create an online Shipibo-Konibo dictionary.

He continues to provide assistance to the NGO Alianza Arkana while serving as the interim administrator for Jakon Rate.  To the amusement of Manuela, Jurriën and others, he tries –often unsuccessfully– to find time to observe dieta while balancing work and a young family. Brian lives near Manuela and provides full-time assistance on many levels.”

“Américo Lopez Sanchez is from a town called Roaboya near Pucallpa, Peru. He also goes by the name Pekon Nima, which in Shipibo means “the many colors of nature.”

The story goes that Américo’s mother gave birth to him under a Shihuahuaco tree near a rubber plantation where his parents were sent to work at the time. His mother, already having had 3 boys before him, had wanted a girl and thus had decided to bury him. As a result, he was rescued and raised by his cousin, who was newlywed.  Américo carried these formative early experiences with him and was inspired by his father, Jose Lopez, and his work as a prominent healer. He decided to follow in his footsteps to become a healer in his own right, to help those who were suffering, misplaced, or otherwise seeking healing.

Although he was exposed to plant medicines from a very young age, he began his training in earnest at the age of 15 by dieting piñon colorado. At 19 he began drinking ayahuasca and assisting his father in ceremony. He describes this as a challenging time of multiple “tests.” Working through these challenges gave him the strength and spiritual stamina to continue his apprenticeship. Some years later after the death of his father, he started dieting stronger plants, and after years of arduous training in isolation, he felt ready to begin working as a healer in his community.

Américo loves being of service and is aware of the importance of traditional plant treatment, especially in communities where people find it challenging to access pharmaceutical medications. He is saddened by how many people he has seen die from lack of appropriate care, which is why he is so driven to bring healing to those who need it. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Américo loves working with children and used to be a school teacher. He is deeply eloquent with a gift for storytelling. He tells us that in olden times, there was a direct line of healing from gestation with diets and song, and he would like to reclaim this type of traditional education that allows children’s gifts to shine through.

“Working with a Western audience I gain a different type of experience and strength given that I tend to work with bigger groups of patients than I would in my community. This allows me to expand my own comfort zones making me a stronger practitioner. Regardless of the origins of my guests, it is very important to me to be thorough in my work and to always come from the heart.”

Americo’s favorite plants are Chiric Sanango, Noya Rao, Marosa, and Piñon Colorado.”

Tanya and I met working together at the Amazonian plant-medicine center the Temple of the Way of Light. Tanya headed the Integration team at the Temple and facilitated workshops there as well. Tanya has a really interesting background and brings a depth of knowledge and experience to her work. I have seen her work deeply with and help many people. She has a lot to share and continues to go deeper into her own work and within the Shipibo tradition. Tanya went pretty deep and spoke about some really important things within this work. “Tanya Kammonen has Finnish, Irish, Ukrainian, and Hungarian roots. She grew up in Canada close to a river and has been interested in consciousness and spirituality since before having words for those concepts. She studied biology and naturopathic medicine and after seeing an increasing number of patients in her practice looking for help with integration post-ayahuasca, allowed that to become a full-time pursuit and became the first Integration Director with the Temple of the Way of Light, developing methodology and programming to help people make sense of their experiences and impactful changes in their lives. Since becoming a mom to her incredible son she has been consulting in various plant medicine-related projects and is part of the founding team of Oni Xobo, an intercultural organization that investigates designs, and implements projects related to medicine, art, culture, and environment, through a lens of divine love. Her intention is to apply and share what she has learned in ways that are true and inspiring to other human beings.”
