Ep. 57 - Dr. Ido Cohen & Deanna Rogers - Ayahuasca, Psychedelics, Integration, & Therapy

YouTube version:

Audio version:

Hey everybody! Episode 57 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with my friend Deanna Rogers and Dr. Ido Cohen. They work together in the field of integration of plant medicine experiences. Deanna uses her own experiences combined with somatic therapy and the work of Gabor Maté while Ido is a psychologist and uses Jungian archetypes. It was a pleasure to sit and talk with them both. They have a beautiful way of expressing themselves and collectively have a deep, experiential wisdom coming from many years of their own work and working with others. I think you all will really enjoy this episode. As always, to support this podcast, get early access to shows, bonus material, and Q&As, check out my Patreon page below. Enjoy!

"Dr. Ido Cohen, Psy.D - As part of his psychotherapy practice in San Francisco, Ido offers integration and preparation sessions with individuals and groups. Following his interest in eastern spirituality, kabbalah and shamanic traditions, Ido dedicated his doctoral dissertation to a 6 year study of the integration process of Ayahuasca ceremonies, while applying Jungian psychology to better understand how to support individuals in their process of change and transformation. He is also the co-founder of The Integration Circle and facilitates workshops on the different dimensions of integration and the intersection of mental health, spiritual health and the entheogenic experience."

"Deanna has been working with plant medicines for the last decade and with the Temple of the Way of Light since 2013. In this time she has supported hundreds of guests through their medicine journeys and also embarked on her own deep healing with the plants through a traditional study of dieta.

Deanna holds a non-judgmental container and a deeply compassionate space to allow whatever needs to arise, to arise. Her commitment is to help people uncover and work with the root of their illness or condition so that they can live a more connected life. This is led through a process of Inquiry, somatic processing, and a balance of guiding and listening. Her work is deeply influenced by her training with Dr. Gabor Mate and his Compassion Inquiry model, Peter Levine’s Somatic Experiencing, and through her study with Indigenous Healers in the Amazon. She is currently embarking on her Master of Counseling.

Deanna offers preparation and integration sessions before and after plant medicine experiences to help ground and live the healing journey. Her goal is to empower people to cultivate deep connections to self, to help integrate trauma and align to their path going forward.”

Ep. 56 - Ynes, Laura & Lila Lopez-Sanchez - Shipibo Curanderas, Ayahuasca, & Healing

YouTube version:

Audio version:

Hey everybody! Episode 56 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with my friends Ynes, Laura, and Lila Lopez Sanchez. The three women are curanderas, or doctors, from the Shipibo people. Ynes is the mother and teacher of Laura and Lila. I have worked with the three of them on and off for the last decade and so it was a pleasure for me to sit down and catch up with them. They come from a lineage of Shipibo doctors and are a real joy to work with and learn from. They all have a tremendous dedication to this work and bring knowledge, wisdom, strength, love, and lightness to their work which is beautiful to witness. They don’t do many interviews so it was an honor to have them come on and share a bit of their wisdom. The interview is a mix of English, Spanish, and Shipibo, so a little patience is required. And a big thanks to my friend Jessica Begin for doing the translation as it’s not an easy job. I hope you all enjoy and gain something from this interview. As always, to support this podcast, get early access to shows, bonus material, and Q&As, check out my Patreon page below. Enjoy!

"Maestra Ynes is a mother of seven children, three of whom are now Onaya healers, and form the main team of Maestros here at Niwe Rao Xobo. She is originally from the native community of Roaboya, next to the Ucayali River, Pucallpa.

At 14 years old, Ynes fell seriously ill with an unknown disease which led her to diet medicinal plants under the guidance of her grandfather and master healer, Aurelio. After successfully healing herself, Ynes decided to apprentice with Maestro Aurelio to learn her ancestral shamanic tradition of the Shipibo indigenous people.

A year later she undertook a diet in the forest that lasted for more than two years in complete isolation from the outside world. Some years later, Ynes continued dieting with her great-grandfather, Maestro and a Meraya healer, Luciano Sinuiri. At the age of 18, she began her last diet with her mother’s uncle, Maestro and Onaya healer, Basil Gordon. These three powerful healers gifted her the base of her knowledge and experience with the sacred plant medicine and ayahuasca.

Now with over 50 years of dedicated experience and ancestral knowledge, she offers a very powerful and beautiful connection with plant spirits; devoting her life to heal others in Peru and abroad. She brings an incredible wealth of knowledge that has been passed down for generations through her family lineage. With her contagious laughter and passion for healing, she distributes light and love with unfaltering compassion.

From an early age, Maestra Laura has been deeply immersed in the world of plant medicine. Laura was given small diets by her grandparents from the age of 10 years and by the age of 16 began her apprenticeship to learn about ayahuasca.

At 20, Laura traveled throughout Peru with Ynes, sharing medicinal plants and ayahuasca ceremonies for local Peruvians. She has also worked extensively with her mother, both in Peru and abroad. She brings an incredible wealth of knowledge that has been passed down for generations in her family line.

Laura works closely with her sister, Lila, and both have dedicated their time to sharing their medicine with the wider community.

Laura is known for her beautiful ikaros, (medicine songs) that pour out her with love and devotion to each of her patients.

Maestra Lila grew up with her grandparents and highly-respected Onaya healers. At the age of 13, Lila was the victim of a strong energetic attack. She then moved to live with her mother, Maestra Ynes and dieted a mighty tree named Catawba. The diet succeeded in curing that evil harm and served as the gateway of Lila’s path as a healer.

Being the rebel that she is, Lila resisted the way, sometimes in favor of leading a ‘normal’ life, but after the birth of her two children, the plants persisted in calling her to work with them. Since then, she has worked with her mother and other highly respected teachers throughout Peru and is also a specialist ikaros Warme. She works with an incredible amount of love and compassion and is an absolute joy to have her in the team.”

Ep. 55 - Adam Aronovich - Ayahuasca, Medical Anthropology, Research & Meaning

YouTube version:

Audio version:

Hey everybody! Episode 55 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with my friend Adam Aronovich. Adam and I met in the Amazon jungle working at the plant medicine center, The Temple of the Way of Light, where he originally came down working on his doctoral thesis. He ended up living, studying, and working in the jungle for five years. I think Adam brings a really unique and important perspective to this work, being able to merge his academic work and observations with his time spent learning from plants and working as a facilitator with guests going through a ceremonial experience. This podcast ending up going quite long, over four hours, which I thought it may, but it’s filled with a lot of insights, observations, and knowledge from Adam’s time and life. It was a pleasure for me to catch up and converse with him and I think you all will gain a lot out of this episode. "As an adoptee from South Korea and raised in the United States, he has been exploring his understanding of identity, family, community, and society throughout his life. Scott spent 6 months in Japan, before making his way to Seoul. What was initially going to be a one-year living abroad experience became an eleven-year exploration of his ethnic background and culture.

While in Korea he was involved in three startup businesses and spent his last five years working as an Executive Coach and Training Program Consultant. He studied Journalism and Advertising at the University of Oregon.

Scott’s innate curiosity lead him to Peru in 2014, and he quickly found himself working at a medicine center facilitating guests in retreat. Known for his compassion and presence, Scott has been working full time as a facilitator for the last several years and is currently apprenticing with his Shipibo maestro Laura Lopez.”
