Ep. 98 - Marc Aixalà - Psychedelic Integration: Psychotherapy for Non-Ordinary States of Consciousness

YouTube version:

Audio version:

Hey everybody! Episode 98 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with Marc Aixalà. Marc is a psychotherapist and has worked in collaboration with a very good organization called ICEERS (International Center for Ethnobotanical Education, Research and Service). ICEERS worked in collaboration with a large ayahuasca center where I worked for many years (the Temple of the Way of Light) doing research on the therapeutic benefits of ayahuasca. We share a mutual friend, Irene Perez (who I interviewed in episode 36), who was doing the research on the ground for ICEERS. Marc recently published a book called Psychedelic Integration: Psychotherapy for Non-Ordinary States of Consciousness. It was great for me to sit down and talk with Marc as he is doing really good work in this field. As this emerging field of psychedelic therapy becomes more common, voices like Marc and resources such as his book are a vital part of how this work will be integrated and accepted into society. I hope and trust you all will get a lot out of this interview and the wisdom Marc shares. “Marc B. Aixalà is a telecommunications engineer, psychologist, psychotherapist and certified Holotropic Breathwork facilitator specializing in supporting people who face challenging experiences with expanded states of consciousness. Since 2013, in collaboration with the International Center for Ethnobotanical Education, Research and Service (ICEERS), Aixalá has offered integration psychotherapy sessions for those seeking support after psychedelic experiences. At ICEERS, Aixalà also works to develop theoretical models of intervention and trains and supervises therapists.

Aixalà has served as a team leader and trainer in emergency psychological assistance at Boom Festival through the Kosmicare harm reduction program. He also worked on the first-ever medical trial on the use of psilocybin for treatment-resistant depression, a study chronicled in the 2018 documentary, “Magic Medicine.” He continues to work as a therapist in clinical trials researching psychedelic substances.

Aixalà is trained in the therapeutic use of Non-Ordinary States of Consciousness as well as in MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for post-traumatic stress disorder ( PTSD) by the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS). Aixalà works as a psychologist in his private practice in Barcelona, Spain and offers trainings, lectures, and talks related to psychedelic psychotherapy and integration.”

YouTube version:

Audio version:

Hey everybody! Episode 97 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with Dr. Tomas Frymann. Tomas was introduced to me by a mutual friend, Michael Kokal, who has a great podcast himself, End of the Road. Tomas is a clinical psychologist who recently completed his doctorate at Columbia University. He has worked as an ayahuasca facilitator, has worked with veterans working with iboga and bufo alvarius, and recently completed a Bwiti initiation in Gabon working with iboga. We spoke about all of these as well as his ideas of Interbeing, inspired by Thich Nhat Hanh. Tomas is a really good guy doing great work and has a varied experience of life which gives him a really interesting perspective. It was a pleasure for me to sit down with him and have him share, and I think you all will get a lot out of this interview. “Dr. Tomas Frymann received his PhD from the Psychology and Spirituality Lab at Teachers College, Columbia University. His research interests center on the study of consciousness and self-transcendence, with an emphasis on investigating the potential for self-transcendence to be taught conceptually through a framework of Interbeing informed by modern science, along with experiential practices, in service of driving social progress and improving life quality. Tomas’ core inspiration lies in helping create a world in which The Golden Rule - treat others as your self - is instilled in the very fabric of how we understand our identity. Outside of his academic work, Tomas competed as a professional skimboarder. He brings his love for the ocean and nature into applied curriculum development, leading workshops and retreats revolving around the exploration of life’s big questions amidst natural settings.”

Ep. 96 - Dr. Rosa Vásquez Espinoza - Microbiology, the Amazon, & Stingless Bees

YouTube version:

Audio version:

Hey everybody! Episode 96 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with Dr. Rosa Vásquez Espinoza. Rosa is a Peruvian-born and USA/Peru-based chemical biologist, storyteller, conservationist, National Geographic Explorer, and artist. It was a pleasure for me to have Rosa on and talk about her ongoing work in the Peruvian Amazon mapping the microbial life of the boiling river near the jungle city of Pucalpa. I think this is really fascinating work as the microbes that can live in such extreme conditions potentially may give rise to a better understanding of life, lead to new medicines, and help to bring balance to the climate, all issues that Rosa spoke about. Rosa is doing really good work and I think you will gain a lot from her insight and wisdom. “Dr. Rosa Vásquez Espinoza is a chemical biologist, storyteller, conservationist, National Geographic Explorer, educator, and award-winning artist. Of Peruvian-Andean and Amazonian descent, Rosa grew up learning about traditional medicine from her grandmother in their backyard’s "natural pharmacy". Inspired to dive deeper, she went onto discovering new antibiotics and green chemistry tools during her PhD. Today, Rosa travels to the most extreme environments in the planet from the Amazon Rainforest to Yellowstone’s acidic, boiling waters searching for the tiniest creatures, from microbes to stingless bees, to create big changes in the world.

With her scientific-based explorative nature, Rosa is an avid communicator that connects the micro-to-macro worlds to nourish our appreciation for biodiversity in all its magnitudes. She also advocates for scientific exploration of untapped ecosystems, living more sustainably as organizations and individuals, conservation of fragile ecosystems, diversity in STEAM, equal access to education and scientist-artist collaborations.

As a researcher, Rosa focuses on deciphering the chemical and genetic diversity of our planet to facilitate the discovery of new medicines, bioremediation tools, and biotechnological solutions in collaboration with local experts. She works closely with communities to use science to empower their economies in sustainable and ethical manners.

During her Ph.D. at University of Michigan and under the mentorship of Dr. David H. Sherman and John Montgomery, Rosa created MicroAmazon, a project that explores the micro-world of the Amazon in collaboration with local experts. Currently, she investigates the Peruvian Boiling River and its heat-loving microbes, and Amazonian stingless bees and their medicinal honey.

As a scientist and award-winning artist, Rosa is driven by curiosity and the adventure of guiding others into discovering and learning about the planet through creative thinking. She collaborates closely with educators to integrate hands-on scientific exploration and conservation into the classroom.

Rosa is a compelling storyteller and has participated in international campaigns with National Geographic & Disney on the recycling of common plastics, sustainability in the beauty industry, and the power of water in science. She also appears as an expert narrator in “Secrets in the Jungle”, a new show with the Science Channel. Rosa is the recipient of the 2020 American Chemical Society CAS Leadership Award, which recognizes outstanding PhD students and postdoctorate fellow that demonstrate promise as leaders in their fields. Her research has been featured in ABC Studios Tamron Hall, Science Friday “20 Top Stories of 2020”, National Association of Science Writers, ASBMB, National Geographic Magazine and Andina Perú.”
