Hey everybody! Episode 151 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with my friend Brian James. Brian now has the distinction of being the first guest to be featured three times on this podcast. I brought Brian on to speak about his new book, Traumadelic. I was really happy to have Brian on again to speak about how he sees the overemphasis on trauma, and the more Western psychological model as whole, is potentially taking away from the richness and vastness of the more traditional shamanic experience. As plant medicine work moves in the Western mainstream, it is understandable that it will adapt and be incorporated into Western ways and cosmovisions. However, this does not come without cost, often severely limiting in scope and potentiality the benefits of both plant medicines and the traditional ways of working with them. This may be a controversial topic to some, as much of this has become a new dogma, but, as we speak about, heresy is rarely accepted with open arms and ultimately a pursuit of truth, however uncomfortable, is to be valued. I trust this conversation will be enlightening and shift some views that we may hold or not even realize that we are holding. I had heard about Remi a number of years ago as I am friends with and have interviewed two of his friends and colleagues, Joe Tafur (ep15) and Martina Drassl (ep42). They spoke very highly of Remi and his dedication and skill to the plant medicine path. He was a Christian monk for a number of years before apprenticing with a renowned Shipibo Onaya (ayahuasquero) Ricardo Amaringo, at the healing center Nihue Rao. From an early age, he witnessed the healing skills of his uncle Esteban, who used medicinal plants and chanted healing icaros to heal illnesses. In 1990, Pervis was confronted with an unknown disease, and despite seeking a cure in the city with pharmaceutical drugs, he found no improvement. But his luck changed when he met his uncle Cecilio Flores, who provided treatment using traditional medicine and the power of plants, with strict diets after eating plant leaves. He regained his energy and received praise from his uncle, who encouraged him to continue developing his potential and wisdom in the use of plants to cure diseases. His faith was strong practicing the power of prayers. He continues his mission of receiving patients and offering his valuable treatments based on ancestral knowledge of medicinal plants and their connection to the supernatural."

His interest in consciousness led him to Latin America and ayahuasca where he spent time with different indigenous groups such as the Huni Kuin, Yawanawa, Shuar, as well as the Santo Daime church. We spoke about this journey and then what led him to other teachers such as the Colombian taitas, Andean traditions, and the Tubu nation of the Colombian Amazon. We spoke about the power of the word, storytelling, his journey into fatherhood, his involvement in the Imago community, and a lot more. I think Michal’s wisdom is very apparent and it comes through his word and presence. “I’ve never been much of a joiner. After an early childhood trauma—the sudden death of my mother, when I was four—I found it hard to believe in much of anything. The election of Ronald Reagan, when I was nine, only underscored the feeling that the world didn’t make much sense. Then, when I was eleven, my school got funding to purchase new telescopes and the science teacher gave the battered old ones away to interested students. I was one of them, and that telescope changed my life.

Marta is one of Cathy’s teachers and I trust Cathy’s recommendations so I was sure Marta would have a lot to share, and she did. We spoke about Marta’s background, her working in Ecuador with Huachuma, her past with activism, how that lead her to Ireland, and how she now bridges multiple approaches including somatics into plant medicine work. We spoke about her work with trees and learning directly from them via the dieta, and this was very fascinating to me as its very similar work to what I do. Hey everybody! Episode 136 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with Max Monge Quineche. I met Max a couple of years ago in a shared temazcal in the Sacred Valley of Peru. I was impressed by his presence in the space and out and got to know him a bit and learn of his work with ayahuasca and the Shipibo. So it was a pleasure to finally sit down and speak with him on the podcast after a few years time. We spoke about his background and coming to plant medicines at an early age, his challenges, the plant dieta, knowledge and wisdom, Western and indigenous cosmovisions, family constellation, and much more. I was really impressed by his wisdom and I think his work with plants really shows in how and what he expresses.
