Ep. 145 - Michal Scheffler - Ayahuasca, Bridge-Keeping, & Weaving the Word

YouTube version:

Audio version:

Hey everybody! Episode 145 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with Michal Scheffler. Michal was introduced to me by our mutual friend Marta (who I interviewed in episode 16). Michal has led a very fascinating and full life. He was a DJ for many years and holds two degrees in psychology. His interest in consciousness led him to Latin America and ayahuasca where he spent time with different indigenous groups such as the Huni Kuin, Yawanawa, Shuar, as well as the Santo Daime church. We spoke about this journey and then what led him to other teachers such as the Colombian taitas, Andean traditions, and the Tubu nation of the Colombian Amazon. We spoke about the power of the word, storytelling, his journey into fatherhood, his involvement in the Imago community, and a lot more. I think Michal’s wisdom is very apparent and it comes through his word and presence. I was really happy to sit down and speak with Michal and hear his wisdom and I trust you all will gain much from him as well. Also if you wait until the end, Michal sings one of his songs that came to him when calling in his son, on the Andean-Amazonian story of Origin. “Michal Scheffler (Sanken Koshi) is the founder and leader of IMAGO Community, a spiritual organization formally established in Brazil and USA, yet present across the Americas.

IMAGO stewards an altar that bridges the ancestral tools and wisdom of the Amazon and Andes into the new time.

While spending the last 11 years immersed in studying indigenous wisdom traditions, passing through a wide variety of diets and initiations led by the teachers of the jungle and the mountains, he predominantly trained in Brazil and Colombia.  The core of his offering is expressed through the weaving of the traditional chants of the Yawanawa nation with the ritual based on the geometry of word, song, story and dance.

While being guided by the teachings of the Law of Origin, Sanken Koshi has also walked a more formal path of university study. He carries two degrees in psychology and specializes in community building. He has observed that cultivating supportive community provides the integrity to create lasting shifts and benefit the individual process.

Fascinated by the reprogramming of consciousness, he adds a subtle academic approach to support the evolution and long-term benefits of the individuals and the collective.”

YouTube version:

Audio version:

Hey everybody! Episode 135 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with Tony Moss. I had known about Tony for a while and, as we spoke about in the show, he came to this plant medicine work over 35 years ago. We sat down and spoke about his life, his career in music, his work with ayahuasca and how that shaped his music into medicine music, his learning with different indigenous traditions, his path in bridging these traditions with Western traditions, and the role of elders. I was really happy to have Tony on to share in his wisdom and I think you all will get a lot out of this episode. “As a recording artist, producer, and creative director at I.AM.LIFE MUSIC, my focus is music as medicine.

Born from a musical family of R&B/Gospel singers, raised & immersed in California's psychedelic/spiritual cultures, and inspired by over 25 years experience working with plant medicines, I combine elements of science & shamanism with multiple music genres to create music that's been dubbed, "soulful-ceremonial" - that's close enough.

At this point in my life, everything I create and offer is motivated by a commitment to the elevation and expansion of human consciousness... or something like that.”

Ep. 86 - José López Sánchez - Ayahuasca, Shipibos, & Master Plant Dietas

YouTube version:

Audio version:

Hey everybody! Episode 86 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with José López Sánchez. I have known José for a number of years since we both met working together at the Amazonian plant-medicine center the Temple of the Way of Light. I have worked extensively with his sisters and mother as well, Lila, Laura, and Ynes, who I also interviewed in previous episodes (see episodes 56 and 6). José is a highly-skilled and powerful Shipibo curandero, a doctor working with a traditional plant and energetic way of healing. He comes from a long line and family of healers and has been studying and working with plant medicines for a few decades now. In this episode, we talked about a number of subjects including his story, the Shipibos, ayahuasca, cosmovisions, and the importance of master plant dietas. José is quite special in that he has a mastery of both the Shipibo language as well as Spanish, and has worked with many Shipibos, mestizos, and foreigners. This ability to communicate this world of plant medicine and a knowledge of how different archetypal minds think is very unique and allows him to express sometimes esoteric or complex ideas in a language that a general public can easily understand and process. So I’m sure you all will learn a lot from José. Thank you to my friend Anne-Laure Vincke for the translation. The video version of the interview has subtitles while the audio version has English translation. As always, to support this podcast, get early access to shows, bonus material, and Q&As, check out my Patreon page below. Enjoy!

Maestro José is the driving force of our center. He is the son of the legendary Shipibo Onaya (master plant-spirit healer) Maestra Ynes Sànchez Gonzales and  Maestro David Lopèz and a lineage of powerful and well-respected healers dating back hundreds of years.

Having apprenticed extensively first under his paternal grandfather, a Meraya (highest level Shipibo healer), then his uncle and his mother, since the age of seven years old, he received the wisdom of his ancestors, the Shipibo-Conibo cosmovision and sophisticated practices of Shipibo plant-spirit healing.

He honorably bridges the modern world to traditional Amazonian medicine and has been healing many hundreds of people locally in various rainforest communities and in westerners ayahuasca centers throughout South America.

Maestro José assumes his role of service with benevolence and tender strength. His work is offered with love and gratitude for the medicine and plants that guide him.

Ep. 83 - Alonso Del Rio - Ayahuasca, Ancestral Wisdom, & The Human Being

YouTube version:

Audio version:

Hey everybody! Episode 83 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with Alonso del Rio. I had heard about Alonso for a number of years and two of my friends spoke very highly of him. Alonso is an ayahuasquero who lives and works in the Sacred Valley of Peru and has a medicine center, Ayahuasca Ayllu. He also wrote a very good book called Tawantinsuyo 5.0. I knew Alonso had a lot of wisdom to share and this interview lived up to my hope. Alonso has been immersed in this work for over forty years and is one of the first people I know to have worked with the Shipibo people. That experience and wisdom are evident when Alonso speaks, being able to bridge the world of plants to the daily world and to be able to bridge many concepts into ideas that are easy to understand. To me, this is a sign of wisdom and it was a pleasure and honor to have Alonso share in this deep conversation. Thank you to my friend Bruno Morey for the translation. The video version of the interview has subtitles while the audio version has English translation. As always, to support this podcast, get early access to shows, bonus material, and Q&As, check out my Patreon page below. Enjoy!

Alonso del Río, lived in the jungle for 13 years following the training of a traditional healer under the guidance of Don Benito Arévalo, one of the most recognized Onaya Shipibo (medicine man), who died in 2005 at age 84.

After learning the traditional songs of medicine shared by his teacher, he receives his own songs and introduces the use of the guitar in ceremonies, creating a sacred bridge between cultures and creating a new musical genre called Medicine Music.

On the other hand his studies on comparative religions and ancestral spirituality led him to develop a proposal based on solid bases and perfectly adequate to today's seeker.

His research is captured in two books called "Tawantinsuyp 5.0" and "The Four Altars" and in several documentaries on sacred plants ("Urpillay Sonqollay", "The Medicine of Forgiveness").

To date he has published ten albums sharing the music he uses in his ceremonies
